Five Faves

Hi Everyone!

It is finally March! The days will be getting longer and the weather will be warming up and I cannot wait! The time between the holidays and spring are always a little challenging as the weather is often cold and grey. Thankfully I have found a few things that I am loving that have helped my days feel a little less grey. Here are my Five Faves for Jan/Feb 2024:

Try – Salt & Stone Hand Cream

I have been a Salt & Stone fan for a few years now. It started when I read about their clean deodorant. I soon graduated to their body wash and I have been devoted to both ever since. Recently I picked up their hand cream and now I can’t imagine not having a tube with me at all times. My favourite scent is Santal Vetiver but I intend to try out the Rose Oud scent very soon.

Watch – Kin

One of my favourite things about visiting my parents in England (aside from the obvious) is an opportunity to discover tv shows that I may not have known about otherwise. I love binge watching a series with copious mugs of tea and a snack or two. On a recent visit I discovered a few tv series that I enjoyed but Kin is the one that I really got into. Based in Dublin, this Irish series is about a drug dealing family that goes after a cartel when their son is killed. While it starts out a bit slow, things pick up and I was hooked until the end (there are two seasons and I am now hoping for a third). If you are looking for a new show to watch, I highly recommend this one.

Read – The Murder After The Night Before

I used to read a lot when I was younger but over the years my reading habit slowed down to a snail’s pace as I let other things in my life take priority. After making a half hearted effort and failing to get back to my love of reading, I decided to set a reading goal for 2023 of 16 books. I knew that it would be challenging but I was determined to achieve it. I finished 2023 having read 24 books and have set a similar goal for 2024. Passing thru Heathrow while travelling is a great opportunity to discover new books and my most recent visit was no exception. The Murder After The Night Before by Katy Brent was a spur of the moment pick up that turned out to be a really enjoyable read. It’s about a woman who unwillingly becomes infamous on social media during a night of drinking. The next morning she discovers that she is trending everywhere and shortly after discovers her best friend has drowned in the bathtub. Convinced her friend was murdered she sets out to discover the truth. If you are looking for a good beach read (or something lighthearted) this is a great option.

Listen – The Mel Robbins Podcast, The 51% Rule (and 3 more Strategies to Think Like a Millionaire)

I love listening to podcasts especially the ones that are focused on self development. The Mel Robbins Podcast and The Diary of a CEO are two of my favourites so when Steven Bartlett (the host of Diary of a CEO) was on The Mel Robbins podcast I was thrilled. This was such a good episode and one that I will referring back to again and again. The past couple of years I have kept myself small, trying to avoid any attention and just feeling miserable due to a challenging work environment. I spent a lot of time feeling like I wasn’t good enough and down playing my intelligence. I was clearly in the wrong environment. Thankfully I am no longer there, and I am working on rebuilding my confidence, finding my voice again and reassessing what I really want my future to look like. This episode got me excited to try to re-evaluate, to jump before I feel 100% ready. It also reminded me that life is short and I don’t want to have regrets. If you are feeling like you are at a crossroads in life or you just need a reminder to seize the day, then this episode is a worthwhile listen.

Try – Threads

Another day and another new social media app to try out. I never got into Twitter (now known as X) as I always preferred more visual apps such as Instagram. After listening to the podcast episode that I mentioned above, I decided to try Threads. It’s a text based conversation app similar to X but it is from Meta. I make an effort to post almost everyday, normally just random thoughts and feelings that I am feeling in the moment. It may not seem like a lot for some, but for me it requires courage to randomly put my thoughts out to the world. As I am getting more comfortable, I am really enjoying Threads. I only follow accounts that I resonate with and I often feel inspired by the words of wisdom that have appeared on my feed. If you are looking for a place to practice your writing without commitment, I highly recommend Threads as a good place to start.

I hope that your March is off to a wonderful start. What are you loving lately? Let me know in the comments below!

Beautifully Zen -Volition Tumeric Brightening Polish Review

There are a few things in life that I could honestly say that I am obsessed with:

Travel? Check!

Food?  Double Check!

Interior Design and Architecture?  Absolutely!

Turmeric?  Without a doubt!

Now obviously my turmeric obsession is completely different then all of the others, and I realize that it is a bit of an odd one to have.  But the truth is that I have been interested in the benefits of turmeric since I was a child.  When I was younger, my mum and grandmother introduced me to the idea of exfoliating with a paste that had turmeric in it to help to achieve beautiful, glowing skin.  Frankly, I would do it everyday if it didn’t leave my hands and nails a bright yellow hue.  Even before I started studying nutrition, I was aware of the benefits of including turmeric in my diet, needless to say turmeric has been a staple in my pantry and on my plate for many years.   (You can read about the benefits of turmeric here)

A few months ago, I was wandering the aisles of Sephora when I came across Voliton’s Turmeric Brightening Polish.  Despite the fact that I has never heard of the brand or this scrub, I immediately grabbed a bottle and headed to the cashier to pay for my new found discovery.

Having used this scrub periodically over the past few months are here is my honest review:

8352e52b-05c8-4350-addc-4ebda7d0b160Volition is a cool beauty company that make products thought up and created by real people just like you and me.  If you go to their website, you can vote on beauty ideas suggested by regular people and they develop the product.  In my opinion, the idea of creating a turmeric exfoliant is brilliant and had I been aware of such a company, I would have voted for this product myself.

The packaging, like all of Volition’s packaging includes a little introduction and picture of the person that came up with the idea for this product –  I love that they get credit for their great ideas!  Other then that, the packaging is nothing out of the ordinary but I will say that the rose gold coloured cap on the bottle is pretty.

38484ef3-747b-4e9e-8011-821dc26c34c7Fragrance – there is no scent making this product idea for people with sensitivities with highly fragranced products

Texture – this is where I was disappointed.  The bottle states that this product is for face and body but the texture is quite grainy.  The exfoliants are quite large which I find are better suited to use on the body as it would be too harsh to use as a facial scrub.  I like to use it as an extra scrub step when my skin needs a little extra attention and follow it with a good moisturizer.

5092da64-f1c8-4bc0-9aff-cd577c6e9ef8I really wanted to love this product especially since it contains my favourite all star miracle spice, but unfortunately I can’t honestly say that I do.  It is effective as a body scrub but there are many others on the market that work just as well and are less expensive.

Stylishly Zen rating – 2.5/5

I hope that you have a beautiful day!  XXS

‘Tis The Season To Sparkle and Shine

Aside from the fantastic food, one of my favourite things about the holiday season is the fabulous fashion.  Beautiful reds, glittering golds and shimmering sparkle suddenly become acceptable everyday attire during the festive season and I love it! While holiday dressing is not for the faint of heart, it is the perfect opportunity to have some fashionable fun and add something bold and fresh to your wardrobe.  Here is some festive fashion inspiration if you are still searching for the perfect holiday look:

My Top 4 Winter Beauty Boosters

Winter weather can cause a myriad of beauty woes.  Even the most well intentioned beauty aficionado can get caught easily with hat head, static cling and parched skin.  While updating your beauty routine for the cold weather is a necessity in many parts of the world, you may also want to consider adding in a few nutritional beauty busters to help maintain your glow all year long.  As I have mentioned (many times) before, I love to eat for skin health.  Here are a few of the food that I reach for when the temperature drops:

Miso

Beauty and good health begin in the belly and miso is a perfect winter warming food.  Made from soy beans, this fermented food is very popular for it’s many benefits.  Miso has been consumed for centuries in Japan and China and many regard it as the secret to the luminous skin that many Japanese women are known for.  It is jam packed with antioxidants that help to address the signs of aging and bacteria (the good kind) which helps to balance the gut flora.  Packed with antioxidants such as isoflavones helps to address the signs of aging and contains beneficial bacteria that helps to balance the gut and in turn aids in keeping the skin clear.  Miso is alkalizing for the body and also helps to strengthen the immune system making it the perfect food to indulge in during flu season.

Tips:

  • Make sure that you use hot but not boiling water when making your own miso soup as you don’t want to kill the good bacteria
  • In a rush?  Enjoy a simple cup of miso soup by creaming a teaspoon of miso in a 1/4 cup of hot water until completely dissolved.  Top with 3/4 of hot water and a few drops of chilli oil if you like it spicy and enjoy!

Mushrooms

I love mushrooms so I don’t need an excuse to indulge but, knowing that they are a fabulous beauty booster makes them taste even better.  Mushrooms are the only vegetables that make Vitamin D from sunlight which is essential for healthy skin and bones.  Vitamin D also helps to regulate the turnover of skin cells which will keep you looking beautiful.  Mushrooms are also a source of zinc which is well known as a acne fighting mineral.  Mushrooms are a total skin clearing winner in my book!

Tip:

  • Try showing mushrooms in to stir fries, pastas, curries and anything else you can think of.  The subtle earthy flavour will add a new tasty dimension to most dishes

Red Cabbage

Most people reach for Vitamin C during the winter months, especially when they feel a cold going on.  While oranges are a great source of it, there are other foods that are rich in Vitamin C as well and red cabbage is definitely on that list.

Red cabbage is said to have twice the amount of Vitamin C then green cabbage making it a smarter vegetable to reach for.  Rich in fibre and antioxidants and low in calories, red cabbage is an amazing but underrated vegetable.  The collagen boosting properties of Vitamin C will help to keep your skin smooth and clear while red cabbage’s anti-inflammatory properties (the carotenoids) help to fight inflammation based skin problems like eczema and psoriasis.

Tip:

  • Roasted red cabbage is simple to make and seriously delicious.  Drizzle thick slices or wedges of red cabbage with olive oil (on both sides), sea salt, pepper and minced garlic and roast for 15 – 20 mins at 450F for an easy vegetable dish

Rosemary

Rosemary

I read a study a few years ago that touted the longevity benefits of rosemary.  Since then I frequently reach for this fragrant herb.  Naturally astringent and filled chockfull of anti-inflammatory properties, rosemary is a powerhouse in the world of herbs.  Helpful in reducing redness and puffiness, rosemary even works to address breakouts due to excess sebum.  Rosemary’s ability to help stimulate the body’s circulation make it a great warming herb that helps you to achieve beautiful glowing skin.

Rosemary’s scent is said to help improve one’s mood, enhance brain function and boost energy – perfect for jump starting those sluggish winter days.  Many people swear by rosemary oil – applying it topically is said to help with indigestion and mental disorders.

Tip:

  • Not sure what to cook with rosemary?  Try a simple rosemary tea, simply steep a sprig or two of rosemary in hot water for 5 mins.  Remove sprigs and add honey to taste, and sip your way to a glowing complexion!

I hope that you have a beautiful winter season!  XXS
